Geological Guide to Blue Anchor, Somerset

(Blue Anchor) - 1994

Blue Anchor is the age of the Upper and Lower Rhaetic from the Triassic. The succession at Blue Anchor is split into five main sections.

Watchet and Langport Beds: This is the first of the beds at Blue Anchor, these are White Lias, laminated shale's and limestone's. The bed is around 9ft thick

The Cotham Beds: These Greenish grey shale's and thin shelly limestone's with Cotham Marble. The bed at this level is 3ft thick. The beds then form a pale limestone with thin brown marl at the base lasting for 1 foot.

The Westbury Beds are the fossiliferous section, the beds begin with black shale's (limestone's in the first upper 6ft of this bed, fossils here include Rhaetavicula contorta, Chlamys valoniensis, Tutcheria cloacina and Eotrapezium concentricum. This bed is around 23ft thick. A Ceratodus Bone Bed follows with massive grit with fish remains resting on thin ripple-marked sandstone. This is the layer which is of most importance as far as collecting is concerned. Following is another layer, 21ft thick of black fossiliferous shale's and thin, commonly nodular limestone with occasional sandstone's in the lowest 4ft. Larger bones can be found in this layer but are less common. The Westbury Beds end with the Basal Bone bed.

The forth main section is the Sully Beds, of a Greyish green and yellow marls. This bed lasts 13 ft.

The last section makes the bulk of the cliff exposures, the Tea Green and Grey Marls, lasting around 110ft in thickness. One of the most noticing aspects of Blue Anchor are the alernating grey and green midstones with nodula white and pink gypsum (alabaster). This is the Blue Anchor Formation.
